CrossFit is a conditioning program that combines Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, high-intensity interval training and functional movements.
What Is CrossFit?
A different "WOD" (Workout of the Day) is done every day. The movements vary: one day might be rowing and burpees, the next day squats and lifting. This variety is designed to keep the body from adapting.
Choosing the Right Gym at the Start
A CrossFit gym, known as a "box," must have a "Fundamentals" or "OnRamp" program for beginners. Jumping straight into WODs without such a program is risky.
The First Weeks
- Learning the movements comes before performance
- Never let your ego decide the weight or intensity
- Resting enough after every WOD is essential
The Most Important Movements
- Power Clean / Deadlift
- Pull-Up and Ring Dip
- Double Under (jump rope)
- Box Jump
- Overhead Squat
Injury Risk
Because CrossFit is intense, the risk of injury can be higher than with other types of training. Not adding weight before you have learned correct form is critically important.
The Power of Community
CrossFit communities are a strong source of motivation. The culture of "finishing the last minute together" is incredibly supportive for beginners.
Don't rush at the start; CrossFit is a marathon, not a sprint.
