Conditioning in football / soccer isn't just about running long distances. It means being able to handle the different intensity levels of a match.
Aerobic Base
Moderate-paced runs of 30–40 minutes, 2–3 days a week, strengthen your aerobic base. This work is essential for keeping up a high tempo throughout the match.
Interval Training
- 30 seconds of all-out sprinting, 90 seconds of walking: 8–10 repetitions
- This structure mimics the sudden bursts of speed in football
Small-Sided Games (SSG)
4v4 or 5v5 small-sided games are excellent for both technique and conditioning. They are considered the most realistic form of training for bringing match conditions to the player.
Flexibility and Recovery
Stretch for 10 minutes after every session, targeting the quadriceps, hamstrings and hip muscles. Good flexibility reduces injuries and speeds up recovery.
Sample Weekly Plan
- Monday: Aerobic run (40 min)
- Wednesday: Interval sprints + small-sided game
- Friday: Technique + full scrimmage
- Saturday: Recovery run or light stretching
Conditioning calls for simplicity, and consistency matters above all else.
