Wrestling is one of humanity's oldest sports and has deep roots in Turkey. Wrestling builds a solid physical foundation for children, and in the right training environment it can be taught safely and effectively.

At What Age Should Children Start?

The ideal age to start wrestling is 6–8. At this age, children have reached a level of motor development where they can grasp body control, balance and simple grappling positions. The Turkish Wrestling Federation (TGF) allows official competition from the U8 category onward.

The Difference Between Freestyle and Greco-Roman

In freestyle wrestling, the legs can be held; the whole body is used as the field of contest. In Greco-Roman wrestling, only the area above the waist may be targeted, and holding the legs is forbidden.

Freestyle wrestling is recommended for children at the start, as it is more dynamic and intuitive.

Basic Techniques

The first techniques learned are the back pull (arka çekme), the double arm wrap (çifte kol sarma) and various bottom positions. Balance and groundwork make up most of the training.

Physical Development

Wrestling is a sport that uses all the body's muscles and develops core, back and leg strength exceptionally well. Regular wrestling training accelerates the development of children's functional strength.

Safety

Mat quality is critical for preventing training injuries. Wrestling mats should be certified foam at least 5 cm thick. The coach must be present for every technique that is practiced.

Conclusion

With both its traditional and Olympic sides, wrestling is an important part of Turkish sporting culture. If you want to build a strong physical foundation for your child, wrestling is an excellent option.
