Table tennis is one of the sports with the most licensed athletes in the world, and it is an excellent sport for developing children's reflexes, coordination and concentration all at once.

At What Age Should Children Start?

The ideal age to start table tennis is 6–7. At this age, children are ready to hold a paddle, track the ball and develop basic hitting coordination. Children can also start from age 5, but the table height should be adjusted to the child's height.

Basic Equipment

For beginners, a low-cost set (table + paddles + balls) or just a paddle and balls is enough. Beginner paddle: ₺150–400; pack of balls: ₺30–100. As the child progresses, rubber quality becomes important and the investment grows.

The First Skills to Learn

The learning order: the basic forehand stroke, the backhand stroke, watching the ball, the serve (a plain serve) and keeping a rally going. Spin and advanced serving techniques are taught later on.

Developing Reflexes and Attention

In table tennis, the ball moves extremely fast. The player calculates the moment of the bounce, the speed and the angle of the ball in an instant and reacts. This constant split-second processing powerfully develops visual reaction speed and attention capacity.

Research shows that table tennis produces higher levels of brain activation than most other sports.

The Social and Family Side

Table tennis can become a family activity that is both competitive and fun. Having a table at home offers constant opportunities to practice outside of training. This home practice noticeably speeds up learning.

Conclusion

Table tennis is a sport that can be played in a small space, with minimal equipment and at any age, and it has outstanding qualities for developing reflexes and concentration.
