One of the most exciting scientific discoveries of the past decade is the strong link between the gut microbiome and athletic performance.

What Is the Microbiome?

The gut microbiome is made up of trillions of microorganisms living in your digestive system. This community directly affects your nutrition, immunity, mood and energy management.

Findings Related to Athletes

Research shows that the gut microbiomes of elite athletes differ from those of sedentary people, with a particularly high concentration of Veillonella bacteria, which play a role in lactate metabolism.

Effects on Performance

  • It affects glucose and carbohydrate metabolism
  • By strengthening the immune system, it can shorten the time an athlete spends sick
  • Because 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut, it affects mood and motivation

Supporting Gut Health

  • Eat a variety of vegetables and fruits (including fermented foods)
  • Probiotic sources such as kefir, yogurt and pickles
  • Prebiotic fibers: onions, garlic, artichokes
  • Cut down on ultra-processed foods and artificial sweeteners

The Effect of Training

Physical activity itself increases the diversity of the gut microbiome. In other words, exercise supports performance both directly and through the gut.

A healthy gut means a healthy athlete.
